Klocke Wins ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America of the Year Award
Southeast Missouri senior catcher Jim Klocke
won the University Division ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® of
the Year award Tuesday.
Klocke, a business administration major with a minor in finance,
became the first player in Southeast baseball history to earn the
prestigious honor. He boasts a 3.94 grade point average.
A native of St. Louis, Klocke is a four-year starter for the
Redhawks. He was named First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference as a
sophomore and junior. Klocke was honored as a Third-Team Louisville
Slugger All-American in 2009 after he hit .394 with nine home runs and
48 RBI.
This season, Klocke has led Southeast to a 30-23 record and its
16th-consecutive berth in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. One of
10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and one of 16
semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award, Klocke is currently hitting
.371 with 21 doubles, 13 home runs and 66 RBI.
One of the toughest hitters in the nation to strike out, Klocke broke
the school's career RBI record against Eastern Illinois (May 21) last
week. In addition, he held a 25-game hitting streak earlier in the year,
currently the longest in the OVC.
Klocke has made 211 career starts. He ranks among Southeast's
all-time career leaders in games played (6th, 211), at-bats (3rd, 773),
runs (2nd, 205), hits (2nd, 280), doubles (5th, 58), home runs (7th,
32), RBI (1st, 190), walks (2nd, 120), on-base percentage (t8th, .458),
total bases (2nd, 438) and saves (t3rd, 8th). Klocke registered 87
multiple-hit, 68 multiple-run and 50 multiple-RBI performances
throughout his phenomenal career, as well.
St. Thomas (Minn.) senior pitcher Matt Schuld was the winner of the
Academic All-America award in the College Division.
Southeast senior
pitcher Kyle Gumieny garnered Third-Team Academic All-American honors.
Gumieny, who hails from Parker, Colo., holds a 3.97 GPA in Engineering
Technology. He leads the team and ranks second in the OVC with eight
wins this season. Gumieny, who is 8-1 on the year, went undefeated in
league play.
