<< BackEmmett Till Murder Focus of Lecture
The 1955 murder of Emmett Till and its influence on two famous
American authors, William Faulkner and Harper Lee, will be the focus of
an upcoming lecture at Southeast Missouri State University.
The lecture, sponsored by the Center for Faulkner Studies and
delivered by Delta State University emeritus professor Dr. Henry
Outlaw, will take place at 4 p.m. Feb. 26 in Crisp Hall auditorium. The
title of the lecture is, "Emmett Till, William Faulkner, and ‘To Kill a
Mockingbird.'”
The program will include a display of a traveling exhibit of
photographs connected to the Till case. The photographs have been
viewed by more than 150,000 individuals across the United States.
The murder of Till, "the murder that changed America,” and
the trial that followed became an important catalyst for the Civil
Rights Movement.
Outlaw taught chemistry at Delta State University from 1966
to 2002 and currently works as an adjunct professor in the School of
Theology at University of the South, a position he has held since 1990.
He also has worked as a development officer at the Delta State
University Alumni-Foundation since 2006.
Outlaw also has been involved in a number of activities and projects tracing the history and culture of the Mississippi Delta.
His lecture and the traveling exhibit have been honored by
the Mississippi Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the
Humanities.
